About the Position: DUTIES CONTINUED: Conducts pre-opening inspections of facilities and provides memorandums on deficiencies that need correction before opening. Makes recommendations to event planners on number and location of potable water sites, latrines, hand washing stations, trash cans and food preparation areas. Traps and identifies ticks and mosquitoes. Inspects the vendors prior to opening and during the event. Conducts surveys for medically important pests at all food service facilities, child development centers, detention centers and schools on a regular basis.

General Schedule
To qualify for the GS-06 level inservice elibibles must posses one year of specialized experience at the GS-04 level. However, for outside applicants (i.e. those without current or prior federal competitive or exceptive service), one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 is required. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One half year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6. Qualified applicants must show in their resume that they have specialized experience in the following:
1) Knowledge of regulatory guidance, concepts, principles, methods, and techniques of environmental health to identify and eliminate hazardous conditions. 2) Knowledge of regulatory guidance pertaining to sanitation and public health, recreational water surveillance and water laboratory techniques in order to conduct inspections of food handling, barber and beauty shops, recreational facilities, child care facilities, schools, confinement facilities, swimming pools and other areas; to determine compliance with applicable health standards; to advise managers on appropriate corrective action; to write inspection reports and to follow up to insure corrective action has been taken. Knowledge and ability to incorporate waivers and solve problems as needed. 3) Experience with various water testing regulations and procedures to collect and maintain integrity of samples for testing, and of procedures for heterotrophic plate count, presence/absence procedures, chlorine and pH meters to conduct testing for pools and potable water. 4) Experience in and knowledge of infectious diseases and epidemiological investigations to survey for suspected food/water/vector-borne illnesses and knowledge of climatic injuries and prevention to conduct interviews and training. 5) Experience with various tick and mosquito habits, breeding sites, diseases, and identification to identify type, populations and diseases in order to conduct the collection and reporting of insect bore illnesses. 6) Experience interpreting, analyzing and communicating a variety of related technical issues to customers, managers, commanders, civilian and military groups, school officials, facility chiefs and civilian public health agencies in coordinating disease control and sanitary inspections and skill in written communications sufficient to write reports of findings and recommendations. 7) Experience testing, calibrating and performing routine repair and maintenance on equipment.The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's basic qualifications requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this position as described in this vacancy announcement.Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Responsible for planning and conducting inspections for the Environmental Health section in the following areas: food sanitation, recreational areas, barber/beauty shops, water quality and entomological surveillance. Provides foodservice training to foodservice managers, employees and staff of special events involving food. Provides foodservice and sanitation training to Family Childcare Providers. Tests potable drinking water. Investigates food/water/vectorborne illnesses. Investigates climatic injuries. In response to complaints/inquires on environmental health issues, conducts research to obtain information and provide recommendations. Schedules, prioritizes and conducts inspections of foodservice establishments such as dining facilities, AAFES establishments, Clubs, Child Development Centers, snack stands, mobile food establishments, carnival/concert food booths and special events.
