QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-7: (1) or more years of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at the GS-7 level?To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-06 level in Federal Service.Specialized experience includes: working experience in the operating room, passing surgical instruments and equipment to surgeons, positioning and assisting in positioning the patient for specific procedures, conducting sponge and instrument counts, being alert for complications of surgery, receiving and preparing specimens for the laboratory, understanding of operating and medical terminology, handling instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures such as open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery and total joint replacement surgery, utilizing universal precautions and follows all infection control policies, providing operating room procedural training to residents and nursing and medical students, maintaining surgical stock, operating sterilizers, setting up, connecting, testing and adjusting surgical equipment such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic and laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment and recording devices.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-7: (1) year of graduate education or an internship with courses directly related to the position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-7:Combination of successfully completed post high school education or internship and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-6 level. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

You will serve as the Surgical Technician (Operating Room) in the Nursing Services Department of the VA Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.Major responsibilities and duties include:Sets up sterile field with all required items for each medial procedure.Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures.Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment.Assists the team members with patient care.Handles all specimens appropriately.Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedures.Assists Registered Nurse with sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy after operating procedures.Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning holding retractors, applying skin staples and cutting sutures.Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices during procedure.Assists in training residents, medical and nursing students in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures.Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions.Maintains operating room (OR) area and stocks supplies and materials.Provides guidance and supervision to volunteers, aides and students of an approved surgical technology program.
