About the Position: The work environment is in the Histology Section. The incumbent will work with latest technologies in the field and can expect a challenging and friendly environment. Serves as a pathology technician in the Anatomic Pathology (AP) Service in the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services of an Army medical center. Job's primary purpose is to perform specialized, difficult, intricate, delicate and demanding techniques in preparing a wide variety of histopathological specimens. Requires a practical working knowledge of techniques of anatomic pathology practices. Position is located in Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) which is located in Northern Washington DC. Inclement weather essential position. Pre-appointment physical with color vision screening is required. Work shift: occasional weekends/holidays and can be either day, evening or night shift.

General Schedule Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped that candidate with the knowledge, skills and abilities used in the preservation and fixation of tissue specimens, processing, embedding, microtome, and staining (including complex special stains). Experience can be obtained through anatomical pathology technician work in (a) cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination; and/or in (b) testing and examining body fluids, etc. for abnormalities in cell structure.The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's basic qualifications requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this position as described in this vacancy announcement.Your pay will be set within the range specified in this vacancy announcement and will be based on your qualification, education, experience, training, and availability of funds.Applicants must demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies required to perform the work identified in the duties description.Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower pay band or equivalent under the General Schedule (GS) or other pay systems.Quality of experience relates to how closely or to what extent an applicant's background and recency of experience, education, and training are relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the announced position. MAJOR DUTIES:

You serve as a histotechnologist who provides all histological preparations required to discern the nature and extent of disease in surgical and autopsy specimens from surgery, clinics and autopsy service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and other institutions supported by WRAMC. You are responsible for the identification, accessioning, proper fixation and processing of all tissue specimens received by the laboratory. You process and prepare special pathologic tissue for study by the pathologist. You operate, maintain, troubleshoot and adjust or repair cryostats. You perform a full range of duties involved in special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain and lymph nodes.
