JOB SUMMARY:
Join us in an effort to maintain and preserve a National Park rich is natural and cultural resources.
Positions will be assigned to the Trails Shop within the Maintenance Division in Olympic National Park. This position will serve on a back country trail maintenance crew as a work leader in Olympic National Park. The work involves living and working in remote back country regions of the park. Work involves long distance hiking often with heavy backpacks, and long hours of hard physical labor while performing trail maintenance and construction tasks.
Up to 5 positions to be filled at Olympic National Park. Duty location for all positions is Olympic National Park Headquarters located in Port Angeles, WA
We anticipate that all selected candidates will work full-time beginning in March 2008 with an anticipated employment period not to exceed 6 months.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify, you must be able to demonstrate enough experience in your application to show you possess sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Experience may be prior work experience or on-the-job training that is appropriate for these types of positions. Failure to submit your narrative responses to the KSAs for this job may negatively affect your eligibility and/or rating for this position.

Conditions of Employment

Lifting/Physical Labor: You may need to lift and move heavy items. You may need to bend, stoop, walk, stand, and climb, and work in cramped positions.
Outdoor Work/Isolation: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated wilderness areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous terrain up to 7,000 feet elevation in all extremes of weather. Hazardous conditions may exist when moving logs, working in and around rock slide areas, working around stock, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
Background Investigation:All selectees will be required to complete a background investigation with favorable adjudication prior to entry on duty.
Driver's License:You may be required to operate a government motor vehicle as part of your official duties.Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid state driver's license.

MAJOR DUTIES:

This position will serve on a back country trail maintenance crew in Olympic National Park. The work involves living and working in remote back country regions of the park. Work involves long distance hiking often with heavy backpacks, and long hours of hard physical labor while performing trail maintenance and construction tasks. Trail workers often carry loads weighing up to 50 pounds and may be required to hike up to 20 miles per day over steep and/or rough terrain.Incumbent often works without immediate supervision or acts as a work leader of smaller crews doing routine trail tasks or when WG-7 crew leader is absent. Works on the maintenance of trails and associated facilities Tasks include clearing trails of wind falls, limbs, rocks, landslides, and other debris: digging or cleaning culverts and ditches for drainage purposes, clearing brush, tread work on native soil, gravel and asphalt trails, may build or repair bridges, puncheon or foot logs. May operate Chain saws, rock drills, power brush cutters power augers and other power tools; and uses axes, pulaskis, shovels, picks, wheelbarrows, and other hand tools. Operates motor vehicles (to 10,000 lbs) to transport people, supplies and materials throughout Olympic National Park. Uses animal packing skills to make up loads to be packed on stock and assists animal packer with loading and unloading animals and associated duties.

These are temporary appointments not to exceed 1039 hours (6 months) employment.The work schedule is full time, 80 hours per two week pay period.The length of this appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
