JOB SUMMARY:
Experience Your America and build a fulfilling career by joining the National Park Service. The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
This temporary position is located in the Facilities Management Division, Roads and Trails Branch, Corral Operations, Yosemite National Park. This temporary position is not to exceed one year and is limited to 1039 hours in a service year. Additional positions may be filled from this vacancy announcement should the need arise.
This announcement will be used to fill positions through September 30, 2008.
Area Information: Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, dental, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Some positions are located in isolated, backcountry wilderness settings. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4000 feet. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season from March through October.
Housing Information: Government housing (some accessible to persons with disabilities) within the park MAY be available on a limited basis and assigned based on management's needs. Available housing units may include tent cabins, mobile homes, apartments, or traditional houses and housing/rooms will likely be shared with other employees, interns, volunteers, etc. Units may be rustic, located in wilderness areas, with few if any modern conveniences. Pets (other than service pets) and overnight guests are not allowed; units are to house assigned employees only. Nongovernment housing may be available for rent in the local communities of Groveland, Mariposa, Midpines, Bootjack, Catheys Valley and Oakhurst.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in the Office of Personnel Management Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations Handbook (X-118C), must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
Veteran's Preference: Veterans who: Entered the military service prior to October 14, 1976; served on active duty during the Gulf War between August 2, 1990 and January 2, 1992, regardless of where the person served; served on active duty for more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning September 11, 2001, and ending on the date prescribed by Presidential proclamation or by law as the last day of Operation Iraqi Freedom; or, served in a military action for which they received a campaign badge or expeditionary medal. Medal holders and Gulf War veterans must have served continuously for at least 24 months or the full period for which called or ordered to active duty and will be at the top of the category for which they were ranked.Disabled veterans (less than 10 percent) purple Heart recipients; spouses or mothers of a 100% disabled veteran; or the widows, widowers, or mothers of a deceased veteran will go to the top of the category in which they are ranked.Disabled veterans with 10% or more compensable disabilities will go to the top of the Best Qualified category and be referred.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Maintains shoes and provides hoof care for over 100 horses and mules. May shoe an average of six horses or mules daily. Feeds, and provides minor vet care for park stock. May be responsible for corral operation on weekends. Maintains horse and mule shoeing supplies. Keeps records and inventories. Instructs and assists Animal Packers in proper horse and mule shoeing procedures. Performs corrective shoeing when required.
Physical Demands: Work requires heavy and constant physical effort in the care, handling, and shoeing of horses and mules in professional farrier work. Incumbent may lift and carry 100-pound loads of hay, feed, material and supplies when caring for stock.Heavy strain is incurred in controlling animals while shoeing and handling.
Working Conditions:Work environment is primarily out-of-doors, often in adverse weather conditions and extremes of temperature ranging from -10 degrees to 110 degrees.Dust conditions exist when moving stock on trails.Hazardous situations occur daily when handling stock in corrals and while shoeing horses and mules and on steep backcountry trails.Hazards are incurred while working with chain saws and axes during logging of trails and when welding.
Work Schedule: Work is expected to last 3-6 months. Tour of duty will normally be 40 hours per week and may include holiday hours, night shifts, weekends and overtime. Position may be terminated or extended at any time prior to the end of the projected season. Positions may also be filled on a part-time or intermittent basis at Management's discretion. Work may entail emergency overtime.
Applicants selected for these positions will be required to obtain a physical examination from a physician prior to appointment. The government will reimburse the cost of the physical.
