About the Position: The Hydroelectric Design Center is attached to Portland District and performs engineering and design, maintains expertise, and develops standards for the US Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric power facilities and large pumping plants nationwide. The Corps currently operates 75 hydropower plants nationwide, which generate nearly 100 billion kilowatt-hours of power per year, enough power to serve more than 10 million households. Corps hydropower plants account for 3 percent of the nation's total electrical capacity. The Corps largest hydropower plants are located in the Pacific Northwest, but there also are important projects in Midwest, South Central and South Atlantic states. Performs software engineering work and serves as tech expert and consultant in the research and development all phases of DACS automatic powerhouse contrl system automation including software and hardware issues, architecture, local area network, wide area network, technology. Develops and maintains methodologies to permit efficient and effective use of highly sophisticated and extensive data information processing facilities. Analyzes current activities and leads efforts either to improve methods of operation, or to effect termination. Designs, develops and oversees real-time generation control software and hardware system performance. Engineering specialist and technical expert in operating system software for a wide variety of personal and server class computers and as technical authority on associated state-of-the-art operating systems and hardware. Conducts investigations into new and unconventional concepts, systems, and techniques for DACS related autom and network technology
