About the Position: Performs highly sophisticated technological exams specific to certain ocular sub-specialties as follows:
Cornea-external disease: keratometry (manual & automated), corneal topography (corneal modeling system), corneal pachymetry, intraocular lens calculations/a-scan biometry, specular microscopy;
Glaucoma: glaucomascope - computerized optic nerve topographic assessment;
Oculo-plastic: kinetic visual fields, assists with oculoplastic surgery, external photography, tear function tests, color vision tests;
Strabismus & pediatric ophthalmology: pediatric acuity measuring devices including video technology;
Ocular pathology: assures proper handling of ocular specimens to include placement in fixative, labeling and documentation.

General Schedule Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is Knowledge of: (1) the basic anatomy of the eye and its supporting structures; (2) the basic principles of clinical, surgical, macro and micro photography and videotaping of patients and surgical procedures, montage creation, and duplication; (3) the special aspects of ophthalmic photography (fluorescein angiography, slit lamp microphotography) (4) the techniques of creating and managing a storage filing system; and the incumbent must possess the skill to (1) operate a wide variety of complex, expensive cameras and related devises to include conventional and/or digital cameras adapted for fluorescein angiography, slit lamp cameras, portable fundus and external eye camera, retinal image display systems for use in argon and krypton laser treatment of retinal and choroidal pathology (2) be able to photograph in the operating room, the autopsy suite, the outpatient clinic, and at the patient's bedside, arranging the subject and choosing appropriate equipment so that the most useful photographic record can be obtained. The incumbent must interact with physicians, nurses, technicians, and patients and be able to blend photography harmoniously in the complex interaction of, for example the operating room. The incumbent must posses the skill to operate erg, EOG, and VEP equipment. Knowledge and skill sufficient to understand and independently use complex ophthalmic equipment, materials, and supplies in a large variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures. Must understand purpose behind each test/procedure well enough to explain it to the patient. Knowledge and skill sufficient to elicit patient medical and ocular history and concisely and completely record it in patients' medical records. Must be able to independently perform necessary preliminary testing using own judgment dependent on history/complaints received from patient. Knowledge and skill sufficient to administer proper drops, ointments and oral medications in the proper dosage and observe patients for possible contraindications. Must be able to react in emergency situations as necessary utilizing own judgment. Knowledge and skill sufficient to assist in the preparation of smears, scrapings and other ocular cultures or specimens for microbiological studies. Must be able to determine proper media for specific types of smears or cultures. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and ophthalmic diseases to communicate with physician and surgeons and understand procedures being performed. Ability to communicate this knowledge in layman terms to the patient.The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's basic qualifications requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this position as described in this vacancy announcement.One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower grade or level requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled.Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. MAJOR DUTIES:

Performs all photographic duties of the Ophthalmology Service, Department of Surgery, Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC). Performs fluorescein angiography of the anterior and the posterior segment of the eye using conventional photography or digital (filmless) fluorescein angiography of the posterior segments of the human eye. Photographs all portions of the eye and its adnexal structures and (during surgical procedures) the intracranial visual pathway and related structure, to include the performance of gross photography, photomacrography, photomicro-graphy, the videotaping of fluorescein angiography and surgical procedures, and cinematography of patients and surgical procedures. Performs electro-retinogram (erg), electro-oculogram (EOG), and visual evoked potential (VEP). Establishes and maintains collections of all angiograms and photographs to include montage-creations of angiograms and photographs, and the distribution of photographs to physicians.
