Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
General and Specialized Experience: Six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience comparable to the next lower level if in the Federal service. Six (6) months of general experience include: any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation AND six (6) months of specialized experience include: experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position.

Education: Successfully completed (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a years duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of full-time training course of approximately a years duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the positions being filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Transcript Required)

Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of creditable experience and education as described in 1 and 2 above to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (Transcript Required)

THIS POSITION HAS WORKING HOURS AS FOLLOWS: 8AM TO 4:30PM
This position is located in the Laboratory Section at the Spokane VA Medical Center in Spokane, WA.Duties include, but are not limited to; answering telephone calls for the laboratory, correlating appointment dates, preparing referral and/or hazardous materials specimens for shipment, packing and shipping hazardous class diagnostic specimens to various reference laboratories and filing the corresponding paperwork, correcting specimen issues, completing problems log worksheet, notifying the ordering physician and contracting the patient for a new sample when needed, ordering laboratory supplies, ordering laboratory tests ordered by physicians, receiving laboratory samples for testing, verifying proper patient preparation sample collection and sample transport requirements for all laboratory tests, completing laboratory paperwork, drawing inpatient and outpatient blood adhering to safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood, instructing patients in procedures to be followed prior, during and after tests, writing out schedules for patient to follow in order to obtain the correct blood, urine and/or stool specimens, following universal 72-hour protocol for blood bank specimen collection, completing sterile collection of blood cultures, performing bone marrow procedures, observing and reports any physical or mental changes while patient are being drawn and assisting in teaching laboratory and medical center personnel theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen requirements.
