Library Technician
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
One year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the
particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully
the duties of the position. Specialized experience must have been
equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-7 level may include:
serving as a senior library technician in performing a variety of
assignments in support of a library's technical operation; performing
descriptive cataloging using an on-line system; assisting in the
acquisition of library materials; performing bibliographic searches
on the basis of incomplete information; assisting individuals in the
use of library resources; performing a variety of cataloging duties;
operating an automated circulation desk; performing library
maintenance; aiding individuals in the use of library resources;
assisting in the physical location of materials and in the location
of information desired; helping patrons with library card catalogs
and indexes to periodical literature; assisting patrons with
reference questions using specialized sources; materials acquisition;
copy cataloging; support of automated systems; or other similar work
in support of library or related information programs and operations.
The work required a practical knowledge of library and related
information services, tools, and methods and procedures. You were
regarded as an expert source of information in these areas, and
developed, adapted and applied numerous and varied guidelines.

Time in grade and all other requirements must be met within 30 days
of the closing date of this announcement.

MAJOR DUTIES:

As a Library Technician, your duties will include: acquiring books,
journals and databases from vendors or direct from publishers; place
procurement orders with commercial vendors; reconcile costs and
billing problems; using computerized databases and other electronic
resources to perform descriptive cataloging of acquired library
materials, entering and maintaining records in the modules of the
library's online systems, e.g., cataloging, acquisitions,
circulation, interlibrary loan, serials, and modules in the NIH
Business System.
