JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Valley/Mather Districts, Utilities Branch, Division of Maintenance, Yosemite National Park . The Park is open to travel year-round and has a visitor load in excess of three million annually. The purpose of this position is the operation and maintenance of water treatment and distribution, and wastewater collection systems in Yosemite National Park and to meet compliance with State and Federal Regulatory statutes.

Area Information: Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, dental, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Some positions are located in isolated, backcountry wilderness settings. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4000 feet. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season from March through October.
Besides Yosemite Valley, the selectee, after reporting to the Valley Utilities Shop, may be assigned to work at Arch Rock, Mather, Hodgdon Meadows, Crane Flat, White Wolf and Tuolumne Meadows, and Tioga Pass. Assignments may range from one day to a few weeks. The employee will be provided housing at White Wolf, Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass, if required to stay overnight.
Work may require employees to pay for government provided food, via payroll deduction, at a rate set annually by the government.
Wearing of the National Park Service uniform is required.
Relocation expenses will be paid as allowed by law.
A pre-employment background investigation is required.

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations Handbook (X-118C), must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
You must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the following knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the work of the Maintenance Mechanic as described under Major Duties above.
You must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors to be able to perform the work of the position:Ability to do the work of the Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision (screen out)Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments .Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.Knowledge of Materials.

Additional Qualifications
In addition to the above qualifications, this position has a positive requirement for the following licenses:
WG-5: must possess a valid state driver's license and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year.
WG-7: must possess a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of appointment.
Water License Requirement: an individual appointed to the WG-5 or WG-7 must obtain a Grade 1 water treatment license within one year of WG-7 appointment.
Other Information: To be eligible for federal employment, male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify at the time of employment that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under Selective Service Law.
Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
In accordance with Executive Order 10450, any employee of the government shall be subject to a background investigation including fingerprinting. A favorable adjudication of a background investigation is a condition of employment and failure to have a favorable adjudication or refusal to complete the background process will result in withdrawal of the employment offer or termination of the appointment.

Major Duties for WG-5 include:
Plumber Helper (33%)- Duties included as plumber helper are: ensure proper operation of water and sewer systems; install and repair piping; follow instructions given by journeymen employees; assist with the repairs of pumps, rodding sewers, and general plumbing maintenance.
Motor Vehicle Operation (33%)-Duties included as motor vehicle operator include: operate pickup trucks, utility trucks, flatbeds, sedans, and jeeps. Normal gross vehicle weight does not exceed 10,000 pounds. Operation of vehicles will be on highways, country roads, steep and hilly mountain roads. Trailers will be towed behind vehicles and the operator is expected to operate within posted speed limits and safety requirements. Routine operator maintenance is also required.
Water Treatment Plant Operation (34%)-Duties included in the water treatment plant operation include: apply basic health, sanitary, and mechanical principles to ensure proper operation and maintenance of microbiological and physical chemical processes related to potable water distribution systems. Assist in the operation of various water systems. Introduce polymers and chlorine into water systems as directed. Operate and adjust hypo chlorinators, centrifugal and reciprocating pumps associated with surface water and well water operations.Start and stop pumps and machinery manually or by remote control. Test for chlorine residuals, record meter readings, read gauges, and follow proper monitoring procedures.
Major Duties for WG-7 include:
Plumbing Worker (28%)-Duties included as a plumber worker include: install and repair different types of piping for water and sewer systems; apply plumbing codes and standards in each repair process; repair various pumps, rodding sewers, and general plumbing maintenance as well as sewage lift pumps and wastewater collection operations.
Heavy Equipment Operator (44%)-Duties included as a heavy equipment operator include: operate heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, earth, or refuse and to excavate, back-fill grades or level earth; clear brush, snow, tree stumps, and rocks; maintain and operate the hydroflusher truck with 1500 gallon water reservoir and 1000 gallon septic pumping truck; gross vehicle weight for vehicles operated at this level may be up to 32,000 pounds.
Water Treatment Plant Operation (28%)-Duties included in the water treatment plant operation include: apply basic health, sanitary, and mechanical principles to ensure proper operation and maintenance of microbiological and physical chemical processes related to potable water distribution systems. Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
Work requires regular lifting and handling of items weighting up to 40 lbs. and occasionally items exceeding 50 lbs. Mechanical equipment may be used to handle very heavy items. Individual may work in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. There is frequent walking, bending, climbing, reaching, and stooping.
Extreme effort is occasionally required in the operation of wrenches and other hand tools.
The person in this position services numerous and widely separated water and wastewater facilities. Individual may be exposed to possible burns, scrapes, and infection. Exposure to toxic chemicals may occur. Work in extreme temperatures from zero to 120 degrees Fahrenheit at elevations from 2000 to 8500 feet is routine. Appropriate wear of Personal Protective Equipment is required for each job performed.
