OG-HW-163492 MICROBIOLOGIST QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:A bachelor’s degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent is required. YOU MUST PROVIDE A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS IN ORDER TO VERIFY THIS REQUIREMENT. GS-07:In addition to the basic educational requirement, you must have 1 year of experience performing microbiology duties?Duties will include evaluating the suitability of specimens for analysis, preparing specimens for analysis, performing test procedures using manual or instrumental techniques, assisting in conducting experiments, and performing quality control procedures on equipment and reagents. GS-07:You may have a combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in question number one above, plus appropriate experience or additional education in order to qualify. GS-07:You may have one full year (usually 18 semester hours) of graduate education in Microbiology, from an institution accredited by an agency approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditations, which can be substituted for the experience. GS-07:You may qualify under Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) based on class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership described below.Individuals who have completed all the requirements for a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and meet one of the requirements listed below are considered fully qualified for the GS-07 level.Grade point averages will be rounded to 1 decimal place. Standing in the upper third of their class in the college or university or major subdivision. College grade of “B” (3.0 or higher on a 4 pt. scale).This is either; -Average of all college courses, OR -Average of all college courses completed during the last two years of the undergraduate curriculum. College grade average of “B+” (3.5 or higher on a 4 pt. scale) in the major field of the position to be filled. This is either; -Average of completed courses in the major field, OR -Average of college courses completed in the major field during the last two years of the undergraduate curriculum. Election to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, or one of the other national honorary scholastic societies meeting the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor societies, other than freshman honor societies. GS-09:In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one (1) year of independent experience performing the full range of duties as a Microbiologist.Duties will include evaluating the suitability of specimens for analysis, preparing specimens for analysis, performing test procedures using manual or instrumental techniques, conducting experiments, performing additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal results, and performing quality control procedures on equipment and reagents. GS-09:You may have two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education (18 graduate level semester hours or 27 quarter hours are usually the equivalent of 1 year of graduate education), or a Master’s degree in Microbiology in order to substitute education for experience.
